People often assume that becoming a Freemason requires an invitation or some special connection. It does not. The old rule still holds true: to be one, ask one. If you have ever wondered about the Craft, the door is open — you simply have to knock.
Who Can Join
In New South Wales, you can apply to become a Freemason if you are a man of at least eighteen years of age, of good character and repute, and if you believe in a Supreme Being. No particular faith is required — Freemasonry welcomes men of all religions — but a belief in a higher power is fundamental to the Craft. Beyond that, we ask only that you come of your own free will, and with a genuine wish to improve yourself and help others.
The Steps
First, make contact. Reach out to the lodge, ask your questions, and tell us a little about yourself. There is no obligation and no pressure — this is a conversation, not an interview.
Second, visit. You will be invited to meet the brethren, usually over dinner at our festive board, so you can see the fellowship for yourself and decide whether it feels like home. Bring your questions; bring your partner or family to meet ours if you wish.
Third, apply. When you are ready, you complete a short application and meet informally with a few members. Once accepted, a date is set for your initiation — the first of the three ceremonies through which every Freemason passes.
What Is Asked of You
Freemasonry asks for your honesty, your good character, and a measure of your time. It never asks you to compromise your family, your faith, your work or your finances — those must always come first. Membership carries modest annual dues, which cover the running of the lodge and its charitable giving.
